OK: here's every Windows icon you will ever want, well almost.
This started out as over 10,000 icons. I had been collecting them
from just about everywhere, BBS's, Compuserve, CD-ROMs, ect. At one
point they filled a 40 meg partition on my hard drive. Using Keith
Ledbetter's utility DUPICON I sorted and deleted all the duplicates,
then resolved all the name collisions. What you have is the result.
Approximately 3000 unique icons (no duplicates). Well!!! almost.
There are a few that look the same but if you look real close there
are a few pixels difference, honest.
Once done with this little bit of insanity, how do I store and use
this mess? I finally decided to use the ICON MASTER library format.
If you don't have a copy of ICON MASTER get one! It is undoubtedly
the best icon utility I have used. The latest shareware version is
available as IMSTR12D.ZIP. It can deal with numerous icon library
formats, including ZIP's, and its own proprietary library format. It
can also edit, change, and install icons in .EXE and .DLL files
directly, and includes an icon paint program with an icon screen
capture function.
The main advantage to the ICON MASTER library format is that it
produces the smallest size library files that I've seen, and the
icon name is maintained internally in the library. This allows you
to rebuild all the .ICO files with their original names, should you
ever need to.
I have also included a file named EMPTY_50.DLL. This can be used to
make your own personal DLL icon library for windows. Using ICON
MASTER open EMPTY_50.DLL and any of the .IMZ library files and just
drag and drop the icons you like over to EMPTY_50.DLL. Drag and drop
moves the icon, shift drag and drop copies the icon. Now, when you
want to install an icon into a windows program just drag and drop
any of the icons that you have saved in your DLL to that windows
program.
You really don't need to use EMPTY_DLL if you don't want to. ICON
MASTER will happily install icons from any .ICO, .DLL, or .EXE file.
This just provides a convenient way to store all your personal icons
in one place.
Enjoy, Bob Gilford.
